Private Commercial Trout Hatchery

One of the requirements for setting up your own aeration system is a good oxygen flow meter; such as the one listed here. You will also need the next piece (shown below the flow meter); to connect to the side of the flow meter and then to the oxygen regulator. The flow meter is the device required to regulate the amount of oxygen that flows into your live haul tank. You will connect this to a regulator and then to the aeration system. (The last piece is the Christmas tree fitting for the outflow portion of the flow meter; I believe it ships with the flow meter; but an extra piece wouldn’t hurt. They are fairly fragile. These fittings are compatible with clear plastic tubing.

At the time of this listing the flow meter was $40.00 plus shipping.

For the regulator; I use the basic oxygen regulator found at Fleet Supply stores; or online on the internet at Harbor Freight; ( http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=oxygen+regulators) or you might already have one that you would use in combination with your welding equipment.  You will also need one fitting for the regulator to use the tubing (usually ¼” ) to fit the flow meter to the regulator. I found one here: http://www.glasscraftinc.com/home/gla/page_24655

Hopefully the web pages will be available; if not just do a search for oxygen regulator fittings.

Hose Connector for Oxygen to fit 1/4 ID Hose

OXY reg fitting

12100-O

Slip-fit connections connect the hose to the regulator or the torch with threaded connections. Right-hand threaded for oxygen connection. Suitable for hose with 1/4″ inside diameter.

Once you have the aeration system built, you can simply add tubing to a piece of soaker (garden) hose and the air will bubble up when the tubing is weighted with most anything; such as a piece of re-bar. Allow about 10′ of tubing before you add the soaker hose. I use quite a bit of soaker hose and re-bar and bend it slightly to make a U shape to encompass a wider area in the bottom of your tank. The soaker hose length should be about 6′ to accommodate a large amount of air bubbles.
